I can’t resist a sale- my latest purchase is this delicious custard funwari (Japanese for fluffy) waffle by Yamazaki bakery. I hadn’t had a waffle in awhile so I snatched this up while I was grocery shopping without a second thought! This cost about 57¢ US. Can’t be beat!
The package came with two mini waffles with a fluffy custard filling. My my, don’t they look delicious? I was practically drooling by the time I opened up the package! Waffles and custard are definitely on my list of delicious food items. 😉
I hadn’t really looked at them closely when I decided to buy them, but they are are more of a cake in the shape of a waffle. Why Japan, why?? No crispy waffle here, just a light cake. The filling wasn’t really a custard like I had thought of, I was expecting something more egg based, like in a custard tart. The texture of the filling was a little thicker than whipped cream. It is hard to describe, but it was tasty.
As usual, this dessert wasn’t very sweet overall. One of the things I appreciate about Japanese bakeries, Yamazaki bakery is no exception!
I saw another funwari waffle from Yamazaki bakery on sale at my local grocery store yesterday in the strawberry flavor and I snagged that one too. Be on the lookout for that review soon as well! 🙂
