Happy Ramadan! Today was the first day of fasting and I was pleasantly surprised how easily the day went by. It might have been because I didn’t have to work today and was able to sneek a nap in. 😉
Since I had the day off I really slaved over the stove to make a modest meal to break our fast. While I was sorting through the fruit, I found two bananas that were very overripe. It was a no brainer to whip up this super easy strawberry smoothie!
For my non-Muslims friends, Ramadan is a bit of a mystery. Most people are shocked to hear that we go without water for a large chunk of the day! This year, the United States has a pretty long fast with 16 hour days of no food or drink. So it’s really important that when we do eat, we make sure to keep hydrated!
The start of our fast today started at 4:45 am. I am NOT a morning person so Ramadan is a personal struggle for me. It’s really important to wake up early and get in a pre-dawn meal called suhoor in Arabic. I woke up right at 4:15 am today and hightailed it downstairs to eat some yogurt and drink as much water as my sleepy stomach could handle before heading back to bed.
Since this gal isn’t getting up to cook food that early in the morning, I rely mostly on premade foods for suhoor. Overnight oats, smoothies and yogurt are my go-tos because they keep me full. Even better if they can be made beforehand!
This smoothie totally hits the spot with just the right amount of natural sweetness. I added chia seeds because they expand in liquid and keep you feeling full for hours! Since we go without water for hours, I added some collagen powder to give my skin a little extra help through the periods where I can’t hydrate myself. You can barely taste them when they are blended! I used more water in this recipe with a little bit of milk but these can be changed depending on your preferences. The more water the better in Ramadan though!
Strawberry Banana Smoothie
2 very ripe bananas
12 oz. frozen strawberries
1 cup water
1/2 cup milk
2 tbsp chia seeds
1 tbsp collagen powder
Combine all ingredients together in a blender. Blend until smooth, and serve.
