Mexican food is one of my favorite types of food to eat! I grew up with it and now I would say that Mexican restaurants are some of the most popular restaurants in town! I think it officially falls under the umbrella of what “American” food is. Naturally I missed it a lot when I was in Japan. In Okayama, I hadn’t seen any Mexican restaurants so I hadn’t been able to satisfy my craving. To my surprise, the friends I traveled with to Hiroshima recommended that we visit a small Mexican Fusion restaurant called Otis!. Otis! is located very close to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial. So convenient!
Otis! had a really cool atmosphere. It’s owned by a couple with a passion for healthy food and live music. It has a very indie feel and has been around since 1987, before I was even born! Almost all of their dishes can be made vegetarian and vegan. They regularly have specials with fresh, healthy ingredients. I decided that the picture and description of the enchiladas sounded too delicious to pass up. I got chicken since I’m not vegetarian or vegan. 😉 They tasted fresh and totally hit the spot!
I guess Otis! has quite the reputation, because the walls are full of signatures from previous customers who enjoyed their time there. There are many signatures from famous people as well. I saw that John Lasseter (director of Toy Story, Cars, etc.) was on the wall! Some people even drew some pretty elaborate pictures. 🙂
I didn’t get a chance to experience the live music at Otis! but I wish I had. We went pretty late at night after a long day at the Peace Memorial and there weren’t many people. My friend was a long time customer of Otis! though and she told me it is very crowded when they host live music events. Calling ahead and arriving early would probably be a good idea on those days! The restaurant is pretty small inside, so I imagine it would get filled fast.
If you’re near the Hiroshima Peace Memorial and want some Mexican fusion food, give Otis! a try. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed. 😉
