Happy Ramadan blog fam! đ The holy month is finally upon us and I couldn’t be more excited. I know it might sound crazy to some of my non-Muslim readers but yes… us Muslims really do get excited about a month of no eating or drinking. It’s a beautiful time to rejuvenate the heart and soul, detoxify the body and reconnect with the most important things in life.
Ramadan always seems to sneak up each year. I always welcome it with open arms because the daily grind of life can definitely cause me to lose sight of what is important. I’m looking forward to strengthening my relationship with God, filling my life with positive vibes and practicing better eating habits. I especially feel the benefits of Ramadan as an emotional eater. I am forced to step back and recognize that I am not the provider of food, rather He is. And it is not beneficial or healthy to overeat and indulge regularly in foods that don’t help my body to function well!
To kick off Ramadan festivities right here on my blog, I will be sharing some yummy recipes that will be on my Ramadan table. I’m really excited to share this month. I’m going to consider it like a month long party. đ
I’ve been drinking a ton of water this year and I have definitely felt the benefits! It can be difficult to drink enough water during the day, especially as a teacher with limited bathroom breaks. But it is so worth it! Not only does it just make me feel good in general, it also helps to boost my metabolism and ensure my organs are functioning properly. Who doesn’t want the toxins flushed out of their body? Ramadan can be an especially trying time for me because going without water for so long is very difficult! When it is time to break my fast at the end of the day it’s hard to not stuff myself with food… leaving no room left for water. After one too many days of a belly too full of food and little water I definitely learned my lesson!
During Ramadan more than any other month it’s important to treat your body well. Unfortunately with the huge dinners and socialization that goes on it’s hard to not overindulge on sugary, fried and carb heavy meals. One of the ways that I have managed to keep it all at bay is to sip on infused water throughout the night. Not only does it get my water intake in, but it satisfies my sweet tooth as well! It’s super easy to make and I really love how easy it is to make and customize. There are so many added nutritional benefits by infusing your water instead of just drinking it plain.
And probably the best part yet… it’s basically calorie free. You can really just throw any fruit, vegetable and herb combination that you have laying around. My personal favorite is citrus based with a nice handful of berries and mint!
I don’t know about you, but I totally eat with my eyes. It’s a blessing and a curse. But I definitely find myself reaching for this water when I see it… it’s so beautiful! You can sip on this water with the positive thought that you are nourishing your body with tons of antioxidants as well as boosting your immunity!
Fruit Infused Water
1/8 cup strawberries, sliced
1/8 cup blueberries
1/8 cup mint leaves, give it a chop or two
2 key limes (or one regular lime)
water (tap works just fine for me!)
Combine and let sit in the refrigerator for 1-2 hours. The longer you infuse, the more flavor it has! The fruit stays good for a few days, so add more water if you run out. Bon appetit!
Q: How do you stay hydrated during the day? What are your favorite water infusions?
