If you know me, then you know my cat Iskander. He is literally the light of my life! I’ve always been a fan of cats since I was young, but I hesitated to get one of my own because of the responsibility. His story is kind of unique and I got him at a crazy time in my life. But when you meet your cat soulmate, you just know!
I was deep into teaching in South Korea when I saw an ad online for a Scottish Fold kitten that needed a new home because of an allergy. I was so excited – Scottish Folds are so cute! I was hesitant to contact them and commit because I was living in a foreign country and would be returning to he US in 6 months. I talked a lot with my coworker who was also an animal lover and she convinced me to go for it! I contacted them right away and was super bummed to find out that the family had changed their mind because the kitten was so adorable. You can imagine how disappointed I was. Although I didn’t get that kitten, the girl told me of a place in Apgujeong where she got her kitten from. By that time, my mind was set so I went right away to check it out!
It was there I found my lovely cat Iskander. He was just a tiny thing, and he looked so much different than he does now! He was smaller and skinnier than the other cats, and he looked a bit weak. He was sold super cheap because he was to them, ugly. Can you believe it? Man those days are gone and he is now a chubby, spoiled two year old. He really grew out of his scraggly stage! He was spirited right away when I met him, running all over the table and even falling off of it haha!
Not only is he super cute, but in general he is a great cat. I think living in Seoul made him very easy-going because he was constantly being held by my friends who missed their pets from home but didn’t want to commit to one in South Korea. I would take him on the bus and the taxi in my purse to visit the vet. Even when we went on the plane back to the United States, he was quiet and well behaved and didn’t even meow once! Even when I had to take him out of his carrier to go through security he just let me hold him without trying to run away. Needless to say he gained a lot of fans during our wait in the security line! 😉
He’s the first person I talk to when I get home everyday and he let’s me snuggle him whenever I want. For me, I’m living the cat dream. Even my husband who isn’t a huge fan of cats loves him (although he’ll deny it if you ask him 😉 )
I decided to get a bit crafty and make him a cat hammock for our bedroom. I don’t buy him many toys or bed items because he loves to just chill in the hidey holes around our condo or in whatever plastic bag or box is available. But I wanted to build him something that he could use in our bedroom. He loves to hang out in my closet and watch me like a creeper so I thought what better than a hanging cat hammock? You know you love your cat when you help him elevate his creeper status haha.
This hammock is super easy, because I’m lazy and I don’t like anything that takes too much time. You just need a few old wire hangers, fabric to weave, and a hot glue gun.
STEP 1: First, bend your wire hangers into a square shape to form the support for the hammock. Wrap the end of the fabric around the bar and hot glue into place, being careful to glue only the fabric and not he wire support.. From there, you can weave your pieces across the wire support easily.
STEP 2: From there, you can take long strips of fabric and tie them to the corners of the hammock. If you need extra support, you can also add more strips on the sides and on the backside of the hammock. It’s as easy as that, you’re done! Now you can attach it anywhere your cat likes to chill. 🙂
I was so happy to see that my cat LOVED this hammock. He loved lounging it as you can see. Totally worth the effort! You can really use any fabric you have laying around or even string for the hanging handles. I was also toying around hanging toys from the bottom for him to play with too, since he loved chasing after the strips while I was making this!
Although I love my cat to pieces, there is one thing that I don’t enjoy at all about having a cat. Can you guess what it is? Oh yeah…. the cat litter. As cute as cats are, man their litter STINKS. I’ll admit I can get lazy and not scoop his litter as often as I should. I hate coming home and smelling that unmistakable stench when I walk in the door that lets me know I’ve waited too long! Because of this, I really invest in a good quality cat litter that stays fresh for as long as possible.
I like to make as few stops as possible, so I pick up his Tidy Cats® Lightweight Cat Litter with great odor control at Kroger while I’m doing my grocery shopping. I love Kroger for their customer service, and their pet items are very reasonably priced. Their lightweight litter variety is great because I can haul it through the store, into my car and then into my house with no problems because of the weight and handle. So convenient! Better yet, their TidyLock™ guarantee makes sure I don’t have stank face anymore when I walk into my house. Just fresh, clean house smell and cuddles with my kitty! There are several Tidy Cat® varieties depending on your needs.
Q: What kinds of things do your cats enjoy doing?
