I’ve never really considered myself crafty. Sure, I browse through Pinterest all of the time. I am a teacher after all. But I’m definitely a save to the board, never look at it again type of gal. I just don’t have the confidence. And I definitely don’t have the time for drawn out projects! I don’t own a sewing machine or a cabinet full of cute crafting supplies. Don’t get me wrong, I love that stuff! I’m constantly amazed by what people out there are creating. I do enjoy working with my hands. If there is anything to get me up and doing something crafty, it is my animal member of the family, Iskander.
My sister is always crafting. She makes soaps and occasionally busts out some Pinterest worthy projects. I need simplicity in my life and I don’t have the patience for some of the beautiful things I see online. I’ve already done a few DIY’s, but I think this DIY is my favorite one of all! It couldn’t get easier than this blanket. There is no sewing required and animals love the warm fleece fabric. Right when I was starting to cut my materials my cat was all over it. Any time I lay down a rug or fabric he immediately comes to sit on it. He is so entitled haha! That is a cat for you.
It doesn’t matter though, because I love that little ball of fluff. He is the first one that I see when I get up in the morning and when I get home from work. I love to just snuggle up with him and pet him even if he does shed like crazy all over my clothes. The price for love! Even though I’m extremely busy, I do like to show my love for him in the ways I can. I always feed him well and give him lots of snuggles. I’m lucky because Kroger has a great pet section with great options for toys and treats that I can pick up while I’m doing my grocery shopping.
He eats dry food regularly but I like to suprise him sometimes with DentaLife treats* (Gotta remember healthy teeth! Plus, he goes psycho when I open these bad boys up! Two thumbs up from Iskander!) or for an even bigger treat, Fancy Feast Purely wet food. He goes crazy for wet food! I love that Purina is offering products with no by-products or fillers. I want him to live a long, healthy life!
Anyways, on to the easiest pet blanket tutorial you will ever see! You only need three things: a pair of fabric scissors and two fleece fabric choices. I went with a cute pink cat pattern for one side and a thicker plain white fleece for the other side. It’s getting colder here in Indiana so the thicker white fleece will be perfect for the snowy winter nights coming up. If you don’t have fabric scissors, regular scissors will do. This DIY is so cheap, I made two cat sized blankets for under $5. Since I had enough fabric for two, I donated the other blanket to the animal shelter so another kitty can stay warm this winter. It’s a win win!
DIY No Sew Pet Blanket
This is a smaller blanket, perfect for those hideaways that your kitty likes to lay in or even for your cats carrier. For two small sized blankets, I only purchased 1/2 yard of fleece each. This fit perfectly in my carrier and will be really helpful for his vet and grooming visits in winter. Kitties love to be warm after all! Did you know that cats curl up in a ball to conserve their body heat? I thought that was so cool that they know to do that to stay warm. 🙂
Once you have your two fabrics, lay them on top of each other. When I got my fabric from JoAnn’s, they weren’t perfectly even. I lined them up as best as I could and cut off the excess fabric so that they would be even. After you have done this, take your fabric scissors and cut out a square in each corner of the blanket. Around two to three inches on each side is a good length, but you can customize it to how long you want your ties to be.
After cutting your squares out of the corners, go along the edges of the blanket and cut long strips. You can cut them all or do one side at a time. I like doing one side at a time because you can see it coming together and keep things for the most part together. Once you have cut the strips the real fun begins! Take the top strip of fabric and tie it together with the bottom strip together two times tightly so it is nice and snug. Keep doing this to all of the ties around the blanket. Fleece has a bit of stretch to it, so don’t be afraid to pull the ties to get them tied together well.
It is as easy as that, because after you tie all the ties together you are done! This is so easy to do, very budget friendly and my cat absolutely LOVED it. In fact, while I was making it he kept trying to lay on it and was not very happy when I kept pushing him off of it so that I could complete the ties. Silly kitty! 🙂 The leftover scraps were perfect toys for him too.
There are so many options for customization, and you can make them as big or as small as you want. Let your imagination go wild and see what you can come up with. 😉 If a blanket isn’t your thing, how about a cat hammock?
