This review is a reminder to myself to not rely on the prettiness of packaging again! It really isn’t a good indicator of quality or ability. I definitely learned my lesson with this BOONS Coloring Bubble Foam Hair Dye. Not only was the packaging really pretty and eye catching, but it was only 3,800₩ (around $3.50) at E-mart. It seemed like a no-brainer.
The last time I dyed my hair was in Japan with a Liese bubble foam hair dye. I’ve used Liese a few times, and I really like the colors and quality… it always does what it is supposed to do. It’s been awhile since I last dyed it, so my hair was starting to look a little crazy… in a ponytail, the hair in the pony was a totally different color haha. Time for a new dye! I wasn’t feeling adventurous, so I decided that I would just dye it back to my original hair color. I was in E-mart so I thought, why not?
I didn’t find Liese, but they did have Palty. It was really expensive and had a very limited selection! They had a much larger selection of Korean dyes so I started checking some of them out… the BOONS Coloring Bubble Foam Hair Dye had a very simple package design that was very trendy. I don’t really like the flashy pictures with the models and stuff, a lot of them are really gaudy looking. I picked up the natural brown color because I thought it fit best with my original hair color. Apparently this BOONS line is specifically created together with E-mart.
So how was it? Just like other foam hair dyes, it was very simple to mix and just apply it into your hair like a shampoo. This BOONS Coloring Bubble Foam Hair Dye had an 8 minute wait time which I thought was really short! There was no conditioner in the package like other foam hair dyes… bummer. It did have a plastic piece to wrap around yourself to protect your clothing from coming into contact with the dye, which I hadn’t seen before.
Even though the bubble foam hair dyes that I have worked with always say to protect your skin from the dye so that your skin isn’t stained, I’m usually impatient and I just slap the hair dye on and wipe off any that I happened to get on other areas. This time I really regretted it though because this dye definitely stains! I washed it off, but there is still a very slight impression of the dye on my skin.
The color of the BOONS Coloring Bubble Foam Hair Dye that I bought was a natural brown color. Not very dark, but somewhere in the middle. After I sat eight minutes, I washed it out with shampoo and conditioner really well. Right from the start, I thought the color was very dark! You never know when your hair is wet though, it always looks darker. I chilled around the house for awhile waiting for it to dry and made the mistake of resting on a white pillow of mine… even though I definitely washed it well, it still transferred some weird spots on my pillow! There was also a glob of foam that fell on the sink that left a faint imprint. Super annoying!
Sure enough, my hair is now black. I have no idea what happened, but it is not a natural brown for sure. This is such a huge disappointment because I don’t think black hair suits me! Blah… I definitely won’t be purchasing this again.
