Flowers are so beautiful and I love to see them in full bloom when spring rolls around. Even though flowers are beautiful, isn’t it unfortunate that one of them is named rape (or rapeseed)? It’s so off putting. I wonder why someone even named it that? When my coworked called it a rape flower I thought she was mistaken but no! No matter what they are called, I definitely wanted to check out Banpo Seoraeseom Island to see the field filled with them!
Banpo Seoraeseom Island is an artificially created island off of a Han River Park. It’s a relatively small island but it comes to life when the rapeseed flowers blossom in the spring. It’s a nice area to take a stroll through the flowers, have some lunch and relax by the waterside.
It’s kind of hard to think of it as an island; it’s very small and just a tiny bridge away from the mainland. It’s basically a detached piece of land. I was a little confused at first because I went on a whim and kept looking for an “island”.
I found out about this place through the Korean Tourism Organization Facebook page. They had posted some amazing photos of the rapeseed flowers and I knew I had to go down and check it out. One of my favorite Indian movies, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge has a famous scene where the lead couple frolics in a huge field of yellow flowers. I thought I might recreate that by myself, haha.
I rode my bike down to the Han and it didn’t look like much. The flowers were beautiful, but it was a really small area with the blossoms. I guess the picture angles really make a difference. Still, it was nice to sit and eat next to a field of flowers and the river.
There were a lot of couples taking pictures together (of course) in the flowers and people just taking advantage of the path to jog or take a stroll. The scenery can’t be beat! There were even some people fishing.
All in all, it was a pretty sight but nothing to go out of your way for. It was relatively close to my house so I liked to chill there sometimes because it was close and had a good view. If you like flowers and are by the Han River, it’s worth a few minutes of time. 🙂
